33 Years of Advancing European Legal Training

Our Roots

Founded in 1992 in Trier, Germany, at a defining moment for European integration, the Academy of European Law (ERA) was created to meet the growing demand for specialised training in EU law. Backed by the European Parliament, ERA was established as a public foundation to ensure legal professionals across Europe stay informed and connected.

Today

Embracing digital transformation, ERA delivers in-person, online, and hybrid training formats, ensuring Europe’s legal community stays connected, informed, and ready for the future.

2020–Present

ERA continues to grow, with Albania (2023) and Serbia (2024) joining its Foundation, reinforcing its role as a reference point for legal training in EU law.

2000–2018

During these years all EU Member States joined the Foundation as patrons, alongside the UK and Scotland, consolidating the Academy's genuinely European character. ERA is one of the founders of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN) in 2001.

1998

A dedicated conference centre opens in Trier, offering a state-of-the-art venue for legal training. An extension in 2011 accommodates growing demand.

1992

ERA is founded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, and the City of Trier, responding to the launch of the European Single Market and the Maastricht Treaty.

Looking Ahead

As ERA continues to evolve, we remain committed to adapting to the changing legal environment. Our future priorities until 2027 include:

  • Expanding networks with partner organisations and legal practitioners, bringing training closer to professionals across Europe.
  • Collaboration and Exchange with EU institutions, in order to stay aligned with evolving training needs.
  • Strengthening our role as an employer, ensuring an inspiring and supportive work environment.
  • Modernising and digitalising our organisation, embracing technological advancements in legal education.
